We are having our first in-person demo of 2022 on Thursday, October 20 with Darcy Tataryn from the Willamette Valley Woodturners in Salem.
Darcy has been actively involved with his club since 2013. He has held almost every leadership position in the club and also has been their State Fair Coordinator, all while holding down a full-time job! Darcy and his wife, Gina, have built a new shop called “Our Dragonfly Studio” where they do woodworking, woodturning, photography, and laser engraving with more techniques to come. They have 10 lathes and the teaching space to have classes on introductory woodturning and also an “introductory turning experience”, think Paint Night but with power tools! The studio is also available for sawdust sessions and other club activities. You can see more on their website, here.
Darcy will be demonstrating the construction of a game he builds for spinning tops. It will combine techniques of bowl and platter turning. The demo will include making the game playing surface, then making and modifying the tops. Embellishing the game with color will be done if time allows.
Darcy likes to make utilitarian pieces (bowls, platters, etc.) and his favorite woods are sycamore, and maple. Even though he still considers woodturning his “hobby” he is taking his knowledge and passion to the public and bringing more people to the art & love of woodturning.
Please join us for this “first” In-Person Demo for 2022, it has been a long time coming! Also as a reminder, our Storage space is built out now (come take a look) and we have our Video and Book libraries available at the meetings, and plenty of shop supplies for sale too! Come early - 6:30 - meet and mingle, help set up chairs, check out the libraries, or purchase your shop supplies at a discount.
