Dan says: In this tutorial, we’ll start off by discussing the many possibilities of incorporating a natural edge on our hollow vessels or bowls. We’ll discuss how using a natural edge begins with the first cut of the chain saw or bandsaw. I’ll review the numerous natural edge designs I’ve created as well as my students’ designs. I want the beginning of the class to be a group collaboration, sharing the ideas and opinions of each student’s experiences. Focusing particularly on their involvement with using a natural edge opening while looking at a slide of photos about the topic. I will then demonstrate turning a natural edge vessel to the class from start to finish. I’ll be using a design I like to use, involving a natural edge. This class will also focus on the process and techniques of turning a hollow vessel. How to mount a piece, how to properly cut your wood, and how to measure your wall thickness for a consistent even wall thickness.
